WOMAN Wisdom / Beauty / Grace

I say it over and over. The joy I get from photographing this demographic 45 plus. As I prepare for 28days with me on creativeLIVE I focus on this gorgeous demographic, how to shoot them market them and make timeless beautiful portraits. So lovely to meet you Robin.

Such a great video too. Thanks to Susan Roderick & Shaun Levra (She is standing on a box btw in the video I explain why)

“I, with a deeper instinct, choose a man who compels my strength, who makes enormous demands on me, who does not doubt my courage or my toughness, who does not believe me naïve or innocent, who has the courage to treat me like a woman.”
― Anaïs Nin

Woman 940 blog

“I watch Women when I photograph them. I see their energy shift. A little sass – a little confidence. They start to feel beautiful and let go. I watch them reign it back in too, sensibility conditioning I suppose. I don’t need approval to feel beautiful within myself. The older I get the more I embrace it. This is not a gift society gives you. It’s part of who you are, you are a WOMAN.” ~Sue Bryce

Shooting Curves: Here’s a tip

Shooting Curves: Here’s a tip TILT your camera down – do not shoot down.

Classic example, we were getting ready to shoot (client was in makeup) setting up the studio corners. I give Susan the camera and say take a profile pic of me for the magazine. Everyone thinks the same thing. I can pose so I should be able to pose myself. NOT TRUE. Posing is only a tiny equation DIRECTING is the key. You see I can not see myself from the other side of the camera. When I’m training photographers I teach them the posing rules. The hardest thing to teach them is angles. So I am going to show more examples of how this tiny tilt can change a body significantly.

Where am I standing in relation to the client. I shoot Right on their eye line. If they are curvy I am just above their eyeline if they a lean I am below the eyeline if the are super lean I can go as low as I want (Think fashion model crops) The mistake most make is to come up to high and shoot down. It doesn’t work as you lose two things – !. Perspective shifts and it looks head first and 2. it no longer looks like a fashion crop. Which is low and square. So how do you slim a curvy body low and square.

Trick the lens. CLIENT: Lift up Tall (Posture first) Chin forward and down (Not the neck just the chin) push bum back from camera (Whats big goes back) Cross knee to push hip out (creates waist) Hands must be real/relaxed create body language with hands and then expression last. Make me believe it. Then slightly above their eyeline and tilt the top of your camera towards them a little. It’s not a don angle its a tilt. Then change Hands and expression until all come in to alignment when you see it, you’ll get it

So Susan is shooting me, I’m barking at her . . . SHOW ME more tilt Susan, SHOW ME Watch hands Susan, SHOW ME bark bark (I’m NOT a good model) and then she see’s it. You can only do this by trying it. But once you SEE . . . you will never UNSEE. Happy tilting.

I shot a video for a public Hailey critique . . . eeeek (on the chopping block)

So Hailey and I are presenting Showreels on the 24th January. I am doing the Marketing component.

I believe the that the easiest way to teach anything, is to bridge the gap between total beginner to advanced easily, by using show AND tell. Lots of visual breakdowns to show the simplicity and then move through that to the advanced. Knowing that every time, you practise something, you will make some big mistakes and you wont learn them until the shoot is long gone and you are in edit (saying dammit dammit)

You know sometimes in a shoot when you get cotton mouth, or nothing seems to be working. You try to keep that brave face but the truth is you walk away thinking you just screwed the entire shoot up. Oh yeah I remember those feelings. I have been a portrait photographer for so long it had been years since I felt like that. Until DSLR came into the world, and I wanted to embrace this new technology and run with it. Watching this evolution over the last 4 years has only made me more and more excited. It has become even more than I had imagined.

Hailey Bartholomew is just amazing to watch work. Her storytelling ability, surpasses just about any I’ve seen. I guess she is the Hipster Film making version of me as a portrait photographer. Meaning: The emotion, connection and storytelling is palpable and that is the obvious mastery of her passion. If you want that in heart speak, her images/showreels and little films fill me with emotion . . . I really get it, and I am really attracted to her work, which makes it the ultimate marketing tool.

Back to cotton mouth and two left feet sooooooo I decided to shoot two videos myself no help from Hailey no instruction ( I have seen her shoot but I have not asked her questions or been taught by her until we do showreels, you see I’m learning too) Then I am going to try to edit them so she can critique them live. I know – you know, I can shoot. But I am new to video too and I want you to see the basic mistakes I have made.

I know the content of this course, and I am so excited to watch her teach it. I am going to fill you with Marketing ideas for your business, I hope they excite you.

This week so far Monday & Tuesday I shot 2 Portraits and I asked each of the ladies if I could video them and tell a short story about them. You will not believe the amazing stories that came out of these woman. But what is more amazing, is the transformation you watch occur in themselves, this is more powerful than a million words.

Dawn: I still think about our lunch conversation. I really do believe some people are just magically put in front of you to teach you something. Meeting you was a great gift. You are a beautiful Woman and watching you light up was just amazing. I cannot wait for people to see your video and see the real you. Thank you also for the thousands of people you will inspire by such a beautiful message, to love your self. You are a Goddess.
Sue bryce Dawn

Kris: When your husband booked your shoot, I knew you were both very special people. Photographing you yesterday and watching you laugh and dance was breathtaking. I am always taken when people speak about their spouses with great love. When you speak about your husband you GLOW. Thank you for sharing your incredible story too. Like I said above so many others will be empowered and enriched by your story, as I am. You are a Warrior.

Feel the Flare. . . Do it anyway

I can’t stop. I really can’t stop. My addiction right now is that Sun Flare. Ohhhh how I love it. Shooting in LA this week with the amazing Hailey Bartholomew. We Photographed/Filmed the super beautiful Tiffany Angeles in her back yard. Tiffany has one of those backyards that you never want to leave. All colourful and eclectic, incredibly well designed and put together by a very talented girl that knows how to shop and entertain. Two of her greatest skills. I like to call her Martha Angeles. Anyway a little sneak Peek of her Blue Walls, a top made by Tiff, a hint of Sun flare, some Boganvillia and shooting through twigs. SO Cool.

I’m also loving the exploring I’m doing with more outside glamour. Putting together something special for you and finding beautiful locations in every corner.
