I shot a video for a public Hailey critique . . . eeeek (on the chopping block)

So Hailey and I are presenting Showreels on the 24th January. I am doing the Marketing component.

I believe the that the easiest way to teach anything, is to bridge the gap between total beginner to advanced easily, by using show AND tell. Lots of visual breakdowns to show the simplicity and then move through that to the advanced. Knowing that every time, you practise something, you will make some big mistakes and you wont learn them until the shoot is long gone and you are in edit (saying dammit dammit)

You know sometimes in a shoot when you get cotton mouth, or nothing seems to be working. You try to keep that brave face but the truth is you walk away thinking you just screwed the entire shoot up. Oh yeah I remember those feelings. I have been a portrait photographer for so long it had been years since I felt like that. Until DSLR came into the world, and I wanted to embrace this new technology and run with it. Watching this evolution over the last 4 years has only made me more and more excited. It has become even more than I had imagined.

Hailey Bartholomew is just amazing to watch work. Her storytelling ability, surpasses just about any I’ve seen. I guess she is the Hipster Film making version of me as a portrait photographer. Meaning: The emotion, connection and storytelling is palpable and that is the obvious mastery of her passion. If you want that in heart speak, her images/showreels and little films fill me with emotion . . . I really get it, and I am really attracted to her work, which makes it the ultimate marketing tool.

Back to cotton mouth and two left feet sooooooo I decided to shoot two videos myself no help from Hailey no instruction ( I have seen her shoot but I have not asked her questions or been taught by her until we do showreels, you see I’m learning too) Then I am going to try to edit them so she can critique them live. I know – you know, I can shoot. But I am new to video too and I want you to see the basic mistakes I have made.

I know the content of this course, and I am so excited to watch her teach it. I am going to fill you with Marketing ideas for your business, I hope they excite you.

This week so far Monday & Tuesday I shot 2 Portraits and I asked each of the ladies if I could video them and tell a short story about them. You will not believe the amazing stories that came out of these woman. But what is more amazing, is the transformation you watch occur in themselves, this is more powerful than a million words.

Dawn: I still think about our lunch conversation. I really do believe some people are just magically put in front of you to teach you something. Meeting you was a great gift. You are a beautiful Woman and watching you light up was just amazing. I cannot wait for people to see your video and see the real you. Thank you also for the thousands of people you will inspire by such a beautiful message, to love your self. You are a Goddess.
Sue bryce Dawn

Kris: When your husband booked your shoot, I knew you were both very special people. Photographing you yesterday and watching you laugh and dance was breathtaking. I am always taken when people speak about their spouses with great love. When you speak about your husband you GLOW. Thank you for sharing your incredible story too. Like I said above so many others will be empowered and enriched by your story, as I am. You are a Warrior.

Cards Websites Comments and Big Dreams

Posing Cards Update: We are at the Printer and so close its excruciating. I’m to scared to announce a date because every time I do, something has happened. My fingers, legs and eyes are crossed. They told me before Christmas but blah blah still nothing. I’m so close to announcing this please hang in there not long now.

Websites: I didn’t write a New Year Blog or an inspirational Blog I decided to just spend my time on holiday reading books. Something I haven’t done for years, it was glorious. Updated website coming in 2 weeks. YAH

You can’t make a comment on my Blog anymore (for some reason) thanks for all the emails this will be fixed really soon. WordPress (eye roll)

This is the only thing I want to say about 2013. Everybody dreams. I used to be crippled by public speaking. I mean crippled! hot sweat – nausea – shaking – humiliating voice cracking crying. Even when I used to stand up at workshops as an attendee and say Hi I’m Sue Bryce same thing. But I dreamed every night that I was on stage (I DONT KNOW WHY) actually I do know why. Because I had something to say, and I had something to teach. I had a struggle time in my first year move to Australia and I knew I wasn’t walking my true path. I knew I was holding my self back. But fear just stopped me from stepping forward. I told some people my secret dream. They told me I was stupid! You see, people only ever mirror back to you what you believe.

One day Michelle Tuddenham from Canon asked me to do a presentation. I bravely said yes. This was my commitment to face my fear, to overcome this horrendous block. I took 4 weeks to prepare, I walked along the beach every day and said my keynote out loud. Projecting my voice (no crying, no shaking) I walked on stage for my first keynote, the room was empty so many chairs. My throat closed, I couldn’t swallow, I stopped breathing and started choking, I nearly peed my pants, my bowels turned to water and I wanted to throw up but I hadn’t eaten for 24 hours.

The voice in my head said YOU CAN”T DO THIS. YOU’RE TOO OLD, TO FAT and they will rip you apart. The doors were about to open to 300 photographers, I couldn’t breath, blind panic – I shut my eyes and when I opened them I thought “I don’t have to make these people like me (some won’t) I don’t have to make these people like my work (some won’t) I just have to tell them why I love it SO MUCH. Because enthusiasm is like magic” Well that was the start of a magical 2 years.

I cannot hide my age, my weight, my accent, my work or my opinions, because I am all over YouTube ha ha So instead, I just accepted my self as I am and focused instead on allowing my self to live the life I dreamed of. Channeling all my energy in to giving powerful educational training workshops and presentations so I can share the many incredible gifts I have learned and gathered as a portrait photographer.

So when I look at the this photo, I say “How, How did that happen? and then I remember that Fear. I remember that Fear, will NEVER get in my way again!

WPPI 2012 1000 people looking back at me, including my Mum & Dad all the way from New Zealand (a very proud moment for me) A big thank you to George Varanakis & Arlene Cohen Evans you believed I could do it.

So there it is, DREAM BIG people. Bigger than you think you are capable of, then DO IT.

A huge thank you to Craig Swanson. Creator of creativeLIVE. You took a chance on me, and I will never forget it.

My Favourite quote this year: from Sherman: Soldier, Realist, American by BH Liddell Hart

“Among men who rise to fame and leadership two types are recognizable–those who are born with a belief in themselves and those in whom it is a slow growth dependent on actual achievement. To the men of the last type their own success is a constant surprise, and its fruits the more delicious, yet to be tested cautiously with a haunting sense of doubt whether it is not all a dream. In that doubt lies true modesty, not the sham of insincere self-depreciation but the modesty of “moderation,” in the Greek sense. It is poise, not pose.”

Feel the Flare. . . Do it anyway

I can’t stop. I really can’t stop. My addiction right now is that Sun Flare. Ohhhh how I love it. Shooting in LA this week with the amazing Hailey Bartholomew. We Photographed/Filmed the super beautiful Tiffany Angeles in her back yard. Tiffany has one of those backyards that you never want to leave. All colourful and eclectic, incredibly well designed and put together by a very talented girl that knows how to shop and entertain. Two of her greatest skills. I like to call her Martha Angeles. Anyway a little sneak Peek of her Blue Walls, a top made by Tiff, a hint of Sun flare, some Boganvillia and shooting through twigs. SO Cool.

I’m also loving the exploring I’m doing with more outside glamour. Putting together something special for you and finding beautiful locations in every corner.

What can a 23 year old Photographer teach me?

I’ve been a Portrait Photographer for 23 years. Lara Jade is 23 years old. What could she possibly teach me. Ha sound like lots of Grumpy Old think they know everything photographers in our industry. Last June I met Lara Jade Fashion Photographer, at a combined workshop in the Gold Coast of Australia. We were both teaching a one day. Her on Fashion Photography and me on Photography business. My rule, whenever I speak at a convention, is to stay and listen to as many speakers as I can. A: because I want to learn B: I want to stay current and C: I’m not a headlining Rockstar thats there to sing a few numbers and leave. I want to KNOW my industry.

However . . . there are a few things I wont sit through. Lighting (Ignorant over exaggerated yawn) Posing! because It’s my thing and it frustrates me to watch people do it badly (not saying every one does, just being blighted and one eyed . . . hey its MY THING, I’m a little protective OKAY) and a few others, anyway. So what made me feel compelled to sit through a Fashion one day, easy answer Lara. I liked her immediately. As we were shooting, I was enjoying watching the students see and experience. I enjoyed watching the models & stylists work and I jumped in everywhere I could. Then Lara set up this shot. She set up the model and walked outside and shot back through the window. I love it, Loved shooting it and loved the result. wow so simple so beautiful.

This image is unretouched. I am on the balcony, using sign language to the model and the reflection is The Gold Coast of Australia, beautiful.

This was my favourite so I finished this in Post. You know I love the look at camera and close crop. I cleaned up the glass and then added some colour sprays (YES, I will demonstrate this Nov 27th on my shooting day on creativeLIVE)

The lesson here is this. How do I use it in my Portrait work? How do I make it my own? and a thank you to Lara Jade. You uplifted me and inspired me to try something new. You taught me something. An old Photographer, a new skill. You reminded me that you must be humble to learn and I am both thankful and proud of you. Your future is going to be very bright indeed.

A few months later I found myself leaning back over a fourth story balcony on my hotel room in Paris. The most beautiful city in the world is wrapped all around me. I shooting through the glass window to Jill who is sitting on the edge of the bed inside. The reason you can see Jill is that is my shadow covering her. It took quite a few goes to get my body in the right position, but then I got it. In post I softened the edge of my black shadow so it’s like a halo around her. I sprayed colour into the reflection and cleaned up the glass.

Don’t stop Playing, don’t stop learning.
