A $2 Top Hat

I’m just preparing some super cool blogs for the next couple of weeks. But I can’t move to the next one, till I show you one more from my seniors shoot. So we were in the alleyway shooting into the sun and over the road was a park with a little hill, so we ran up the hill and got the last little flare as the sun was sinking. There are 40 other images I will share from this OUTSIDE GLAMOUR/Seniors shoot and I will save that for creativeLIVE. Including the video which frankly I’m just fizzing about, but I have to collect as much as I can to show you and teach you.

I keep getting emails saying OH you’re shooting Seniors now? he he FYI I have always shot Seniors except in Australia and New Zealand we call them teenagers. Seniors are over 65. We don’t have a seniors market here in Aus, sad really as it’s a very lucrative market in the States. Although I think I have always dominated in shooting teens as I have a Brand that teenage girls flip out over. I have always been shocked as to how many young Women can convince their Mums to do a shoot with me. Although secretly it’s the Mum’s I think.

So the sun was setting, my client had so much energy (because we stopped to buy an icecream) and this was a $2 dollar top hat. From Hot Dollar. I love cheap fun, props that don’t look like props. Also I’ve been wearing it around the Studio I feel like SLash from Guns & Roses. So remember to get that candid but controlled look but not posed spin LOOK BACK CONNECT THE SHOULDER spin again LOOK BACK CONNECT THE SHOULDER chin down and smile spin again LOOK BACK CONNECT THE SHOULDER and look down. WHOOHOOO lots of build em up energy, loud and in full control, so you look more stupid than they feel and then they will do anything.

When you are in the most challenging situations, look to the Sun.

My Seniors shoot took me to this grungy alley way. Spray painted graffiti walls and Rubbish bins. As we hit the hard light of 4pm winter, I was overwhelmed with Shadows and Bright hard lights on the face. I took a little suitcase of accessories and I rummaged for these flowers, stuck them into her hair and turned to the Sun. As a Studio Shooter I never get to see or shoot the sun flare. My last series for the day jumped out as my favourite series of images from the whole shoot. Love it when that happens.

But Im not just going to talk about it, I’m going to do it LIVE for you all to learn.

and I’m bringing Simona back too, The first two days are HAIR & MAKEUP with Simona Janek. She’s an incredible Makeup Artist and makes my job so much better. This is everything you need to know to incorporate this into your business, Hair & Makeup for shooting Natural Light and Flash. Trends, Tips and tricks and amazing Glamour Makeup our Style, All ages and everyday faces, I will then shoot every girl that comes out of the makeup chair so you can see a beauty shot of her made up. Then for 3 whole days we are shooting everything my style.

How I built a brand on the before and after, you must get this right for it to be powerful. Shooting and showing 30 images that sell, after all we are here to make an income. How I direct & shoot flow posing through 180 degrees of movement. This is really about taking control of your client movement right down to last eyelash. As soon as you direct with confidence everyone will look and perform like a model, thats when you get images that look connected and controlled.

Watch four different bodies pose the same way, one in lingerie, one Mum client, one Curvy girl, one 60 plus. Same direction different subtlety, same beautiful result. Why the Seniors demographic love my brand and beg their Mums to come to my studio. Watch how I shoot a gorgeous modern Seniors brand that they love and can’t get enough of. I will show behind the scenes capture of we created the new Hailey Bartholomew Senior Shoot video. I will show you how to Fashion it up, Glam the Dress, this has definitely become my favorite play time in the studio and my clients always love it.

I do boudoir differently than most, it’s more of a beauty style for all ages and sizes (No Bums) I will teach you my own style of Film noir, a classic style of nude type dark image that has definitely become my signature style. Styling my shooting wardrobe, all the way from Sydney so I can show you styling dresses, accessories and how to make a basic and effective shooting wardrobe. You’ve seen my posing rules, here’s your chance to watch ‘The rules’ played out over and over again until you can perfect them.

Posing twos and Posing threes. By request Curves Curves MORE girls with curves, and girls with MORE curves too. You’re client says ‘I want to look candid not posed’ I will show you how to make posed shots look like Candid shots but fully directed. The Beauty shot and the Cover girl shot that sells for me every time. How I Set design corners and windows to make the most of posing and natural light. Elegant portraits shooting the highest earning demographic in the world fifty plus. Do it with style and elegance.

That should take three days. (wink)

Jerry Ghionis . . . A great Gift

I often talk about my country shift nearly four years ago from New Zealand to Australia. At the time I had built a remarkably success portrait business and moved to another country to start all over again. My goal was simple, breeze in set up a studio and have instant success. Then I would have two great studios in two countries. I came and I struggled, in a country that didn’t know me, to a down turned market 2008 and I was suddenly a very little fish in a big pond. I also didn’t have my NZ team, a team I often hid behind and needed constant reassurance from. This was another huge learning curve. Finding my OWN confidence, reconnecting to my craft, to my gifts. Establishing my own power, self belief and learning to not work through ego (comparing) but through pure enthusiasm and gratitude.

So here I was alone in a new country and I HAD to make it work. My first connection to make money whilst I built my shooting diary up was to offer Photoshop. A skill I have fallen back on many times in the last 23 years. I met and did some retouching for Jerry Ghionis. As Jerry was leaving one day he turned to me and said “How much do I owe you” I replied “Oh look I practically did nothing don’t worry about it.” His response was simple “I value what you do, and I am happy to pay you for it” At a time when I had lost my path and wondered if I was walking in the right direction that simple phrase woke me up. It’s to easy to lose VALUE for what you do. I now pay people and say this very same phrase. I say it with gratitude and sincerity, the same way Jerry said it to me.

This week I called Jerry in LA for a mentoring session regarding some of my goals and I asked if he could share something for my readers. So check out a free chapter on Jerry’s educational website for photographers, the Ice Society. There are 55 chapters in the library. Join to access all chapters by the end of August and save $115. Promo Code: 115off. You will find me on chapter 37 and 22 featured as a retoucher. I also have a FREE One Year membership to give away this week, if you shoot wedding and you want this membership go to my facebook business page SueBrycePhotographer and write one paragraph on Valuing yourself and/or your work and I will pick the best one. I will give away this membership on Friday.

I thank Jerry for his advise, wisdom and friendship. If you already work like this it’s a reminder and if you are just discovering this power tool of Value then know this. It will CHANGE you and it will CHANGE your business.

Take a peek of some recent video highlights of this online educational tool Jerry created and thousands have enjoyed …

I endeavour to Astonish

I endeavour to astonish you, with a blog comeback. I am not suffering from blog constipation, just an overload of work.

Since creativeLIVE I been receiving 300+ emails per day for the last 4 months. I am booked till March with Shoots (which is where I cut of my diary) and I am turning away more work than I could possibly do and it is driving me crazy. As a business owner with a strong marketing plan, I cannot fathom turning away work. If there is a clear indicator that what I do is in demand then this would be it. There are so many Women around me that want to experience their ‘beautiful’ selves and I wish I was capable of shooting EVERY ONE of you.

I had returned from my last travels only to take off again to shoot and speak in the Gold Coast and then stopped in Sydney for a heart beat only to take off again to Perth. I did 2 days judging 4 days speaking and 8 days shooting. Right now I am sitting in the Perth domestic airport waiting for my 5 hour flight across the Nullarbor desert (A great road trip one day . . . when I have time) Balance is the key, this I know and I am trying to find mine. Service is the Answer, this I also know and teach/preach. I am trying to balance servicing my beautiful clients on the move and of course ‘Having a Life’

After my Masterclass yesterday one of the guys walked up to me and said “I just don’t understand why you’re not married.” (How cute) well . . . um I thought about it and I’ve decided I need a man that can Multi task, yes thats right I asked my assistant to put an AD on Craigslist she wrote this, ha ha ha ha

WANTED: Male Business Manager Extraordinaire aged 35 – 50 (Must be single & love cats) To manage international business dynamo ultra feminine, trained killer, Lipgloss wearing, eyelash batting Glamour Aficionado (That gets extremely cranky when hungry, and pays excess baggage on shoes) ha Awesome

Getting on a plane now just thought I would give you a giggle and let you know I’m right here, I’m catching up and the cards are Almost ready. Much Love

My iphone Inspiration

I have a wee confession. I used to read magazines in waiting rooms and if I found an image I loved I would cough loud and tear the page out. One day this waiting room was really really quiet so I stole the whole magazine. It was 2 years old people. Okay Okay I was so guilty I went back there a week later and took some magazines and dropped them off. Anyway now that I have an iphone my magazine ripping stealing days are over. Now you will find me reading and photographing magazines. I could spend my life looking at photography.

All my inspiration comes from Fashion magazines. I shoot them with my iphone and store them in my inspiration file and I try to learn the poses so I can replicate them or the mood of them. I kept this image for a year before this couple walked in to my studio. My biggest question as I was learning to pose and direct was – How do they fill the frame with arms and legs like that? How do they make people react and interact like that? Because people don’t move like that naturally. It was easier to start practising poses and then getting people to react in those set poses than it was to try to set up the whole scene as something spontaneous.

Pose first, relax them into that pose so you BELIEVE IT. Then get them to hold the position and connect, to you, to eachother. Take my posing cards, or pics that you find inspiration in and practise that ONE pose until you can do it over and over. Then when it becomes something in your ‘repetoire’ you can start to have fun with it and explore more angles.
.

This was the image I took out of magazine that day. An image that stayed with me for years. Many years later I know it’s somewhere in a ‘Safe Place’ and I don’t remember where. But now I have Google. It took me about 8 goes to find this image in a Google search but I finally did. This Image is over 10 years old, I cannot credit the photographer I don’t know who took it (as I would now have to do on Pinterest) But I do know that 10 years later this image still burns in my mind and I am still making these dresses for shoots.
