HOW TO MAKE A photoshoot Frock. Fast cheap and hand stitched. Yes a mannequin is good but a friend is just as fun. Make them coffee or pour them a wine and laugh and create together. I cannot afford the gowns I want to photograph so I create my own, also I get bored so I want to make new things. Often I will go and buy a large bolt of tulle. Tulle is easy to stitch and makes large gowns really quickly NB: you will need 10 – 20 yards tulle is priced from $4 – $10 a yard or metre in most places (always look for fashion districts or fabric wholesalers) This Frock Fabric $28 Ribbon $6 lots of fun. Looking at my stitching now I wish I had been a little more particular but I was going for fast ha ha. Okay I can hear My beautiful Mum who tried to teach me dress making say “You’re so impatient, slow down do it properly”
Hand stitch. I have gathered the tulle enough so no lining is necessary. yes tulle is see through and scratchy thats why you need lots of it however a girl in one of my dresses HAS NEVER COMPLAINED thats its uncomfortable.
I needed to make this fast and easy to make but also size adjustable this is a size 8 U.S mannequin Size 12/14 NZ AUS she is a curvy lass not a zero. so I paid $6 for ribbon and tied it on to the tulle end at the back so it can be adjusted similar to a corset.
You could sew in a zip, or a band with islets like a corset or Velcro. There is not many times I photograph anyone walking away the purpose of this gown is for a Glamour shoot. So I wasn’t to worried about seeing the back.
Take the rest of the fabric double its width to make it about skirt length and gather and pin and stitch – gather and pin and stitch all the way round. It doesnt matter if it is larger than a waist line because it will be stitched onto a ribbon that will make the skirt wrap around style and therefore size adjustable. No lining necessary just make sure you gather as much fabric as you can. Of course when you shoot you add as many other tulle skirts underneath to boost volume. The ribbon around the waist band I stitch on last mostly to hide my bad hand stitching but also to tie the dress on.
I asked my own hair stylist to make a Hair piece for this shoot on her day off. She purchased all this synthetic hair for under $50. Join Me and Lara Jade world fashion Photographer on creativeLIVE Oct 10 11 and 12 and we’ll show you more of this fantasy shoot and how to make / design / shoot and create your own.
