Natural light seems to scare people but I think not as much as flash does. I am so narrow minded when it comes to flash, when I see models shot with flash I say FASHION when I see everyday women shot with flash I say BAD GLAMOUR yuck yuck. Natural light for me is the essence of what I do. I often laugh that my client will ask “where are the lights” and then have their shot done in an ordinary room and say “Did you get something” I always smile and say Yes I sure did.
Window to her right and window to her left. Bum backed into the corner, leaning forward towards a reflector (It’s all about the bounce) Fan in the hair. Working the shoulder, chin forward and down, asking for the expression.

Hi Sue, just found your blog via pinterest. I also prefer shooting with day light – but normally food. One question: how did you get the background in the finished photo? Just stamped the window and corner edge? And: when I shoot people in rooms only with daylight I normally don’t have enough light, so I have to increase the ISO and then the photo becomes grainy – which I like, but for clients it seems just blurred or something. Your photo (also the SOC) looks so finely grained. How did you do it? Cheers Susanne
I try to shoot at 640. Because it is well documented that the sensor works best 160 320 and 640. Easy when you have the 50mm and can shoot at 1.2m so its easier when it’s wide open. But I do shoot with large white polystyrene reflectors so I bounce in as much as I can. and I am not afraid of shooting at 2000 because I like the grain.
The separation light really makes this photo. I’ve been really into back-lighting recently because I love the extra dimension it gives. As far as Natural light vs. Flash, I come from the school of Available (as in whatever is available to you). To me it doesn’t matter what kind of light it is. What’s more important is the quality of the light and how you use it.
